Well, well, well... it is that time again. Passageways Artists Studios which Sankofa Doll Artistry is a member will be holding their Open Studio on Sunday, June 26th from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm in Riverdale Park, Maryland.

This is the first summer open studio we have had in quite some time. I invite you to come out and see my latest doll art, pins, and other mixed media work. Remember doll art makes great gifts for birthdays and other special occasions. In addition, I will be on hand to discuss that special commission you would like for yourself or a loved one.

Hello artists and art lovers. On Saturday, March 5, I represented PeacexPeace along with Women for Women International and others at Washington, DC's Duke Ellington Bridge to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Women's Day which is TODAY. The campaign is called "Join Us on the Bridge" and it is sponsored by Women for Women International. There were women representing several organizations including students from local colleges who majored in international affairs. My organization, PeacexPeace was a co-sponsor.

It was an honor and a pleasure to be part of this small group of women supporting and joining in the statement of the status of women all over the world.

During our short time together encouraged and raised awareness to those who passed by the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day to join us. I briefly spoke about the mission of PeacexPeace and encouraged participants to go on our website and learn more about our mission to promote peace and dialogue among women around the world!

I would like to thank Mary Ellen Kustin who organized the event in Washington, DC on the Duke Ellington Bridge on Saturday!

Latest Exhibition: Making HerStory 6 Kick Off Reception, Friday, March 4 th 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

I will be exhibiting work from my Queen Series- Mixed Media dolls on canvas for The ThickArt Collaborative with Authentic Contemporary Art and The Center For Green Urbanism “Making HerStory 6”, the Annual Celebration of Women in the Arts Exhibition. The Making HerStory 6 series will kick off with a Grand Opening Reception Friday, March 4, 2011, 6:30 pm-8:30 pm at the Center for Green Urbanism, 3938 Benning Road, NE, Washington, DC. This event will feature music mixed by female online syndicated radio DJ, DJ Fusion of Fuse Box Radio and refreshments by the female foodies at Art.Food.Life.

This month will be full of various unifying events celebrating women artists in all genres. The celebration will take place at The Center for Green Urbanism, 3938 Benning Road, NE in Washington, DC’s Ward 7, March 1-31, 2011.

Making HerStory celebrates the vast and diverse forms of creativity offered by women artists. With this being the sixth year of Making HerStory, the creators have found a renewed energy among many of the artists in the Making HerStory family. This year’s theme is The Era of Our Dreams, exemplifying a new energy arising from the ashes of the last decade’s struggles, into a new era. Making HerStory 6 is about collaboration, growth, and sustainability.

The Doll Blogs: Sankofa Studio Doll Pin Featured in New Book

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME: January 7th Reception

Greetings all! It has been some time since I posted. The wintry weather, power outages, etc., really had me going this January. However, before the month is over, I wanted to share with you the photos from the January 7th reception of the art exhibit "The Shape of Things to Come" at the Sandy Spring Museum running through March 27th.

I was happy that I sold one of my dolls "Full Bloom" during the opening reception to the Chair of the Board of Museum. In addition the event got coverage in the Montgomery County Gazette on January 26th.

I have some small dolls, pins and doll cards on sale at the Sandy Spring Museum in celebration of the exhibit. Stop by the museum gift shop.

There is talk that we may take the exhibit on the road. I certainly hope so. It has been a true honor to show my dolls at this wonderful exhibit. Do plan to make a trip out to Sandy Spring Maryland to experience it.

THE ULTIMATE ARTIST: Lady Tee Transitioned at 54

Since I was 12 years old I was captivated by this Caucasian soul singer protege of the late Funkster Rick James. Teena Marie died in her sleep on December 26th at her home in Pasadena at the age of 54. She was found by her beloved daughter Alia Rose.

In case you did not know, the first several songs you hear on my blog is none other than Lady Teena Marie. I have saved my favorites. They are pick me ups for me whenever I enter this Sankofa Doll Journal Blog.

You know in 1989 I owned every recording she had ever done? I am not sure what it is about her music that I loved so much. She was an avid reader and a lover of words. I feel like I just lost one of my best friends...

Several reports say that she had a massive seizure about a month ago. I did not know. One report says she may have died of a heart attack in her sleep. However, Alia and her family are keeping the cause tight and I don't them. My heart and soul goes out to her daughter and her family and friends.

It was always my dream to meet her in person and talk to her and though that never happened I still feel very close to her. In my mind, I never thought she would leave so soon!

My favorite of her recordings, of course was the monumental LP "It Must Be Magic." Her lyrics to songs dug so deep within me and I was honored to attend several of her concerts in later years.

One of my favorite liner notes appeared on one of her earlier LPs:

"I have always known there was a purpose in pain as well as joy... for the fine lines of my face remind me of the people who put them there."

I have come to embrace the friendship of so many of her friends on Facebook and I am honored that they have embraced me as their colleague as well.

There is a movement to get her a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I hope NOW that she will be recognized for the contributions to art and music that she so surely deserves. I hope now this happens.

Hello All! I know it has been a while since I blogged. However, I just wanted you to know that I have been recently inducted as the newest member into the Board of Peace x Peace. The mission of Peace x Peace, a Washington, DC based, non –profit organization, is to advocate for effective ,sustained policies and programs that support the advancement of women. The organization “Acts as the connection point, which facilitates dialogue and exchange between women in the Arab and Muslim countries and the Western world. It helps reduce misunderstandings and stereotypes”. Created in 2002 by Patricia Smith Melton and six other woman rights advocates, Peace x Peace was established to help bring harmony to women internationally through social networking and other forms of media.

As the newest board member, I will contribute my leadership expertise, help generate new fundraising activities, and use her marketing acumen to bring increased awareness and donations to the organization. My interest in international affairs was generated through my experience working under President Bill Clinton’s women and girls focused Africa education initiative.

Through this organization, I plan to contribute my artwork and build my dollmaking around peace for women all over the world. I hope you join me in this endeavor!

Hello world! Just wanted to let you know I will be in another exhibition at the start of the new year at the Sandy Spring Museum in Sandy Spring, Maryland! It is entitled The Shape of Things to Come. I am honored to be the doll artist among some extremely talented women artists of the Washington, DC area.

A Creative Collaboration

It all started when Cynthia Farrell Johnson, a painter, met Sharon Keyser Jackson, a fiber artist. Each admired the work of the other. They mused about the possibility of doing a joint project some day. A little over a year after that initial conversation, they hit upon an idea. Johnson would create four designs and Sharon would interpret them as tapestries. Johnson invited longtime friend and an extraordinary quilter, Lezetta Moyer, Johnson to join the group. The next artist drawn into the project was Johnson’s sister, Betty Farrell, an accomplished knitter who has collaborated with her sister in the past. When Desiree Sterbini, who does exquisite oil pastels, heard about the project, she wanted to join. Wanting to find a way to bring a three-dimensional artist into the mix, and remembering a doll exhibition they had seen at Sandy Spring Museum, the group invited Sherry Burton Ways to join. Altogether their work celebrates the many ways that artists express themselves. The titles from each of Johnson’s original paintings form the common thread.

They are:

--Out of Kilter

--Balm in Gilead

--In Full Bloom

--Hearts and Minds.

These titles hold a different meaning for each person. The goal was not to copy Johnson's initial design, but rather to express the meaning each one held for the artists. The titles, colors, and moods inspired these artists’ derivative works in unique ways.

This is the shape of things to come. If we are to create something new, we form creative collaborations. It is the best way forward.

My HOT FLASH Interview in Pamela Hastings New Book!

I am honored to be included in Pamela Hasting's new book entitled, Hot Flash! A Celebration. Pamela is a wonderful nationally renowned doll maker. Through some informal conversations late last year, she invited me to join some of the most talented and creative doll artists across the country to interpret the meaning through a doll of Hotflash.

Now just so you know, I am not in my menopausal years yet, but know enough about it through watching my mother go through it as I was going through my puberty to teen years!

This book is a seven-year project undertaken by Pam. It is an inspiring collection of stories and images of dolls and paintings, on the wide-ranging theme of HOT FLASH--inspiring stories from women from all walks of life. Once you read this you will want to share this with your friends, and add your own experiences to the mix.

I was asked to fill out a short questionnaire about Hot Flash and what it means to me. Check me out on Page 98-99. Here are a few of my answers:

Question: What does the term HOT FLASH mean to you?
Me: It means the most important time in a woman’s life when she transitions to a mature, accomplished, and meaningful life.

Question: What did you always dream of doing? Have you done it, and if so, would you tell us about how you were able to fulfill your dream? Have you done/accomplished anything since you turned 25/40/60 that has surprised you, surprised your family or other people? If so, how has that achievement changed how you see yourself? Has it changed your remaining aspirations?

Me: I always dreamed of being a musician. A singer, songwriter and producer. I have not done it yet. But some day I will. Bought a guitar some years ago and need to get my lessons. I have started two creative businesses one an interior design firm and the other a mixed media art studio. Both of which have studios outside the home which I am proud of, surprised by me and my family members. This accomplishment has changed my thinking and I have truly been inspired by what one person said to me several years ago “I believe you can be successful at anything you set your mind to.”

Question: What advice at your age now....would you give to yourself at age....? Would the younger you have listened to the older you? How would that have changed the way your life is now?

Me: The best advice I can give someone at my age is not to take yourself too seriously and always follow your dreams. Find what it is you are meant to do on this earth and do it! Knowing how I was when I was younger I probably would not have listened to me. If I had of followed the advice I am giving now, I probably would have had a much happier and meaningful life in my 20’s and 30’s.

My Next Exhibition "RECREATE: The Art of the Recycled!"

Join 20 of the area’s top visual artists for the opening reception of ReCREATE “The Art of the Recycled” from 6 to 8 p.m. October 15 at the grand opening of the Center for Green Urbanism, DC’s new art-infused green business incubator. The Center provides office and event space to small businesses and start-up companies. During the grand opening reception, the in-house Tubman-Mahan Art Gallery, will debut original works created from recyclable and “eco-friendly” material. I was off traveling again! This time I took a cruise with my husband in July to the West Caribbean and went to Cozumel, Mexico. Cozumel is about 50 miles off the coast of Mexico near Cancun!

Upon disembarking from our cruise ship we traveled on an organized tour of many of the sights of the island. Some of the artistic highlights I am sharing here above. I truly enjoyed the beautiful colors and interpretations of art shown at the Discover Mexico Theme park and Museum. In addition, some of the colors and artful inspirations found throughout the island.

As always I plan to incorporate this into my doll making and mixed media work. Enjoy!

Mixed Media Doll Making While Celebrating the Gullah Tradition

On Saturday, August 7, 2010 I had the privilege of hosting 21 participants in my Mixed Media Gullah Doll Workshop at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Southeast Washington, DC. I was invited to give this workshop by the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative in Washington, DC.

The theme of the workshop was Mixed Media Doll making in the Gullah tradition. Participants were challenged to hone into their own creativity and create dolls made out of Popsicle sticks, cardboard, and pipe-cleaners.

The workshop started out with a discussion of the Gullah culture, history and folk traditional doll making.

Supplies were given to all participants that included fabric, yarn, ribbons, shells and other found objects. Each class member created something unique and different from each other.

Children, their parents and grandparents participated. It was such a magical event -lot's of positivity and sharing. Two noted doll makers- Joann Banks and Imani Russell also participated.

A joyful time was had by all.

Many thanks to the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative and the Anacostia Museum for providing me the opportunity to host and instruct this powerfully positive workshop!

Through the art of doll making, I will embark on a spiritual journey, leading me back to a heritage that is a wonderful fusion of African traditions and Southern American history.

As an artist, speaker, and through workshops, I will celebrate the folklore, language, and art of Gullah people. I invite you to be inspired by this unique culture and the beautiful stories it has to tell... ...I will combine the history of doll making from the Gullah perspective with a demonstration of mixed media doll making techniques. Participants will learn the art of doll making and create their own doll.

Hi as promised, I am showing some of my latest art doll work that I have been putting together as part of a series. These are part of the Natural Woman Art Doll Series I am creating. They are made from sticks that I have found outside my doll studio in Riverdale Park, Maryland. I was inspired to create these from the Transformational Doll Making class I took earlier this year. These will be on exhibit with more dolls shortly.

Coordinate dolls and accents with your room's architectural features, color and furniture for a more permanent display of dolls.

One of my collectors had their home redecorated by my design firm, Design Scheme Interiors, LLC. For their foyer, they decided to have dolls created to add to their vast collection of artwork. Well see above. We also created clothes to change with the seasons.

Dolls can provide a wonderful burst of color to any room. Consider your dolls, the location and opportunity to display them as an accent.

Decisions, decisions, Moi and Cassandra trying to decide which doll goes back to South Carolina with her!

I just had the beautiful opportunity to meet one of my esteemed doll collectors Cassandra Rush of the African American Doll Museum in Columbia, South Carolina. She and I have been corresponding for nearly a year to get one of my dolls into her collection. After much e-mail traffic and some hits and misses, we finally caught up in Washington, DC yesterday evening and had a lovely time.

I showed her four of my dolls and she loved them all! Finally after much debate, she settled on "Pinky" one of my healer dolls. Turns out Cassandra is not only a doll collector, but she is curator and author. In addition, outside of collecting dolls, she is an avid African American art collector. We talked about our love our art and what motivates her to collect dolls. Cassandra states "I pick dolls based upon how they make me feel."

She is a wonderful lady who has a vision and a passion for collecting. I feel very honored to know her.

On Saturday, June 5th, I was honored to have been one of the artists represented by Vivant Collection to have my mixed media work auctioned as part of the Links, Incorporated fundraiser for several Haitian organizations including:

Delaware Links, Inc. member, Valerie J. Gilliam, Chair of the fundraiser event, was the winner of one of my art pieces "Queen Series: Wild and Peaceful."

Over 100 prominent guests of the Wilmington, Delaware community feasted on Hors D'oeuvres and cocktails while listening to the wonderful music was provided by child prodigy Emma Gould who played a special violin selection: Haydn Violin Concerto No.2 in G Major, First Movement.

The event was held at the beautiful Delaware Art Museum in downtown Wilmington, Delaware.

As part of the event, the highlighted "Haiti: A Tribute to Art" Exhibition provided an excellent backdrop to the event.

So beautiful, warm, inviting, spring colors. It made me consider how beautiful they are and how I can perhaps replicate them in my artwork.

Art Inspiration from Genoa, Italy

My husband and I are joined by a delegation from Detroit at the Waterfront Conference reception dinner the night before we left.

A new friend Rhoda and I head back from and day long shopping trip in Portofino on the Italian Riveria to Genoa in time for dinner.

Transportation safety in Genoa is apparent by the fact that pedestrians do not cross the busy but dangerous streets in Genoa but underground crosswalk filled with murals and art.

Hi, I just returned from a wonderful trip to Genoa, Italy. I went there to tag along with my husband who was there for a waterfront conference. All I can say is WOW! This beautiful Italian small city sits in the northwestern region of Liguria, is Italy's principal seaport and was a 2004 European Culture Capital. Genoa is a great Italy travel destination and has a fascinating aquarium, an interesting port, and a historic center said to be the largest medieval quarter in Europe, with a wealth of churches, palaces, and museums. The city boasts to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus.

The Genoa portion of the Italian Riviera has several interesting villages, ports, and resorts. Most can be reached by train, bus, or ferry

In addition, I had this great opportunity to tour one of Italy’s Mediterranean treasures Porto Fino, and the finest colors and interiors of this magnificent country.

This trip inspired me to begin to create dolls and artwork that signifies the colors, shapes and sounds of the region.

The Mediterranean palette is rich and diverse as the architectural landscape that inspires it. The colors draw from the buildings, the sea and the sky, flowers, and the olive groves.

I am now wondering whether to make a mixed media series based on this travel or a collection of dollwork. In any case, I was truly amazed at the rich culture and colors that were all around me.

I was very fortunate to be able to experience this rich region of our world!

Imperfect Mama- A Mother's Day Tribute

Hi just was fooling around in my studio today. Taking a quiet meditative break and celebrating in my own way the life of my mother Eleanor Simmons Burton who transitioned in April of 1998. I put together the makings of another mixed media art doll on canvas to be part of a collection I am putting together for a fall show. This one is called "Imperfect Mama". It celebrates that while mothers including mine work for the best of for their children, we often place them on pedal stools expecting them to be perfect in every way. I learned as an adult that this is not always so.

Note the stitching on this piece is irregular and imperfect.

As a member of the ARCH Development Corporation's Advisory Committee which overseas the programmatic activities of both the Honfluer and the Vivid Solutions Galleries in Anacostia, Washington, DC, I was led with other members on a creative economy tour of Anacostia. Briony Evans, Creative Director of the Honfluer Gallery, Beth Ferraro, Creative Director of Vivid Solutions and Andrea Hope, Director of Vivid Solutions Gallery led the tour.

Most of the members of the committee brought others, overwhelmingly photographers, who documented various sites along the way. We visited vacant buildings that will be proposed for new "Pop Up" gallery opportunities for curators and artists, a youth green jobs project to train teens in Anacostia how to build and use green technology for future green jobs, the Big Chair cafe, a new coffee shop and art space, and Vivid Solutions' dark room and training facility for youth interested in learning the art of photography.

I learned so much from the visit about how ARCH Development and partners are trying to promote the area to bring in more creative opportunities and lure creative businesses to the area.

In addition, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities' ART (202)TV Show recorded the event including interviews with those who participated on the tour.

As a member of the committee and a East of the River artist, I truly enjoyed the tour and learned so much. I am looking forward to witnessing the revitalization of this community through the arts!

Arts Advocacy in the District of Columbia!

I thought I would share with you the need to be involved in advocacy efforts to retain and expand arts opportunities and funding in the District of Columbia. I am sharing this message from from Ron Bettman of DC Advocacy for the Arts via FACEBOOK:

"Dear Advocates:

The arts took a huge hit in last year’s budget – far larger by percentage than most city agencies. On April 1st the Mayor released his draft FY 2011 budget, proposing an additional 12% cut from last year's reduced funding levels.

What can you do about this?

Sign up to testify at the budget hearing for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and at the hearing speak up about how important support for the arts is to your work, your business, your neighborhood, your children, and this city. To sign up to testify contact Antonio Brentini at 727-6683 or e-mail sbrentini@dccouncil.us. The budget hearing occurs Wednesday, April 21st from 2pm at 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. Room 412.

I am happy to announce that I have been accepted into the Community Arts Series with East of the River Artists through the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative to conduct a mixed media doll workshop at the Smithsonian's Anacostia Community Museum on Saturday, August 7, 2010, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm, in Southeast Washington, DC. Hello all! Sorry I have not blogged in a minute. Just wanted to share with you my foolings around in the art studio. I am in the process of getting some new work done. Mostly at this time, I am working on my mixed media art dolls for some shows later this year. I don't know about you but sometimes I get what I call creativity block. I have been on a block for several months trying to get my mojo back. I think it is slowly coming but I don't know. I just was excited to find some beautiful yarn at a quilting shop at in the Savage Mill in Savage, Maryland called And Sew It Goes. This yarn and vibrant colors jump started me into thinking of some cool ideas for some mixed media art dolls.

At this time, I am purposely not applying for any new shows and such. I feel like I want to go deeper with my art and emerge next year with some really cool stuff. Oh that does not mean that I will not be in any shows this year, I am just not focusing my work to compete with any other artists at this time. Recently while talking with fellow studio artist there emerged this treadmill theme that we felt we were both on: creating art in a rush to be able to participate in shows just to be in them. We found that we were creating art without meaning. Just fitting a theme. This artist made a profound statement about his mission is to "get back to art for art sake." I truly believe this as well. We both agreed that art and the process for doing it should be an enjoyable experience.

So I am in a cocoon waiting for the moment the butterfly will arise and fly through the sky in all its beautiful splendor

A BIG Doll Find at a Quilt Show in Prince George's County, MD

This is the giant doll I witness at the entrance of the quilt exhibit.

This weekend I while attending the celebration the Grand Opening of the Gateway Arts Center, I happened upon a wonderful exhibition of the Uhuru Quilters Guild of Prince George's County entitled "Freedom: Contemporary African American Quilt Art." This exhibition tool place at the Prince George's African American Museum and Cultural Center's Gallery 110.

According to the website for the Prince George's African American Museum and Cultural Center:

"Freedom: Contemporary African American Quilt Art" aims to capture the dynamic creative energy that fuels the Prince George’s County-based Uhuru Quilters Guild. It is a vivid snapshot of continuity and change. Some quilts evoke the style of past eras, while others are explicitly contemporary. Diverse techniques have been joined together in an array of colors and fabrics to create a single, yet multi-voiced statement about an often-overlooked African American art form. Each stitch helps to preserve and perpetuate an important cultural and visual tradition."

Now, I had no idea that this exhibition was there and was happy to view the beautiful quilt work of the artists.

Outside the entrance to the gallery I beheld one of the most magnificent art dolls I had ever seen. I had to take a photo of it to document my find!

The exhibit, "Freedom: Contemporary African American Quilt Art" will be showing at Gallery 110 through May 15th.

What a beautiful Saturday evening it was for the curated La Femme Mystique, A Tribute to Women's History Month exhibition, at The Vivant Art Collection in Philadelphia's gallery row!

The Special Artist Reception was yesterday! I truly enjoyed meeting and talking to the many wonderful artists and guests who attended. I also equally enjoyed the artist talk featuring all of the outstanding women artists in the show!

Among the guests at the show: Pamela Brown and Beverly Dawson owners of the nationally known African American gallery, Art Jazz and Barbara Whiteman, Director of the famous Philadelphia Doll Museum.

The evening was filled with wonderful music, food, and lively discussion about African American women and their artwork.

The art in this show reflects my personal journey as African American artist. In particular my observation, exploration and daily reflection on metaphysics, spirituality, race relations, gender, and African American folk traditions and how these factors influence the views of society.

Create Everyday: Transformational Doll In Progress

Hi just fooling around in the studio today. Earlier in the year I took Pamela Hastings Transformational Doll Making Class. I am sad to say that I just started trying the exercises since I was too busy with my design business to do so earlier this year. One of them was the pattern for the doll you see here. I call her Evolving. I just read a post from Erykah Badu one of my beloved singers, today on Twitter which she simply states this word.

I took the word and I am in the process of creating this transformational doll to illustrate the evolution of life, changes that each of us are going through or have gone through, as mothers, lovers, friends and daughters.

I am planning on embellishing more on this and make it a personal doll for me, not for sale.

The mission of the organization is to rally artists and visionaries to work as a collective to teach art and social awareness to the youth in Mali.

Philece Roberts is an artist at heart and a designer by trade, musically inspired and culturally stimulated. Her art is a freedom of expression, in which she finds the meaning of life's truths and understanding through her growth and revelations. It is in the essence of her work that she defines herself as a woman and her pieces bring to life, her eternal love affair with art.

Nataki Mcneal Bhatti is an African aesthetic and revolutionary artist, who has created her own interpretative language, style and technique. She is in an exploratory stage in which each work comes from different tangent degrees separate from the others. The one common thread in her paintings is the use of chroma and natural inclinations which authenticates her Accapella voice.

Vivant Art Collection is a cultural arts gallery located in Old City, Philadelphia. Vivant features art from Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America Diaspora, specializing in Haitian art, masks and ceramics, which are all as vibrant, rich and bold. "This Wednesday teams of arts leaders will visit policy-makers' offices as part of DC's Arts Advocacy Day. In addition to taking meetings, we want to flood the city council and mayor’s office with the message: if you support the arts, you have my vote.

On March 3rd please take a minute to email and/or call your legislators for the arts, and before the day, please forward this to your personal networks, employees, etc. Here is what you might say in an email, or phone call:

Hello. I’m calling for (policymaker name). My name is _________ and I am calling to urge you to maintain arts funding in the FY 11 budget.

Black History Doll Show and Sale Highlights From This Weekend!

Carole Brothers of Agape Dolls

This weekend's Black Doll Show and Sale was fantastic. It was held Friday, February 19th and Saturday, February 20th at the PG Plaza Mall in Hyattsville, Maryland. Several great doll makers and artists were in attendance including, Carole Brother of Agape Dolls, Doris McGillan of Heritage Designs, Daisy F. Carr, Doll Artist and Designer, among others.

Yours truly enjoyed the event and learned a lot of about the Doll Making and Showing world. Several of my colleagues and fellow doll makers from New York City came down and showed support for several artists in the show.

Many visitors to the show noted it was their first time being surrounded by so many beautiful dolls. Others were serious collectors who were regular visitors to the show. Still some were regular collectors of some of the doll makers in attendance. I met some new collectors of my dolls as well.

WUSA Channel 9 in Washington, DC covered some video and interviewed several artists about their works. Film footage included all the artists in attendance. Barbara Whiteman of the Philadelphia Doll Museum was also in attendance.

If you missed it there will be another one in the fall. Keep your eyes and ears posted. I will be there again!

Joy Spirit Worshippers!

Spirituality is such an inspiration for this series of Art Soul dolls I am creating called the "Spirit Worshippers". They are art healing dolls inspired from Camilla La Mer's Art Soul Doll workshop I attended in Denver, CO last year (see The Journey: Dolls for A Soulful Purpose for more details).

Because of what is happening all over the world, Haiti, the economic crisis in the US, the frustration of the snow in the Maryland, DC and Virginia area, I created this doll series to speak to comfort within ourselves. These dolls are designed to bring joy in times of sorrow, love when there is hate. Each doll calls on whatever spirit you believe in or that brings you joy. Hands are raised to worship and harness the spiritual energy to keep us moving.

I am trying to decide whether or not put clay faces on them. They are a work in progress. Let me know what you think?

Celebrating Black History Month and the Art of Doll Making!

February is Black History Month and the African American folk art of doll making is something that is exciting to explore this time of year. Doll collecting among African Americans has historically included elements of history and genealogy, with childhood dolls being passed from mother to daughter for generations. The dolls also provide a continuing link to the past – their simplicity, uniqueness and age that mark the gradual progression of African Americans socially.

This month, to celebrate Black History Month and the history of African American doll making consider:

*visiting the Philadelphia Doll Museum, to get a glimpse of the history of African American Dolls and doll making.

*purchasing and reading Debbie Behan Garrett's book Black Dolls: A Comprehensive Guide to Celebrating, Collecting and Experiencing the Passion

*visiting a local African American doll maker's studio in your community, take a doll making class or subscribe to their newsletter or blog.

*attending a Black History Doll Show this month. I will be participating in one in Hyattsville, Maryland. See my earlier blog post.

*traveling to the Gullah Islands off the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina to get the flavor of traditional doll crafts and the history behind them.

This month is an exciting month to share your love of dolls and find a sense of history in the African American community. Let me know some other ideas of how you intend to celebrate the history Black Doll making!

Haiti: Contribute to Those Charities That Will DIRECTLY Impact Conditions There

I apologize that it has taken me a few days to blog about this important issue. It has been on my mind and I am taking my time to determine what words I want to say about it. I think as artists we have a responsibility to inform the world of needs and trouble and to communicate not only to ourselves but to a higher power.

I am troubled by what happened last week and feel like I need to create a healing doll to help me understand and recover from this horrible tragedy. I ask my fellow bloggers and readers to consider contributing your money, time, or energy to whatever mission or charity that will directly impact the conditions in Haiti.

Hyattsville, Maryland's Design Studio Gallery "GOT MORE ART?" exhibit, includes two of my Art Soul dolls as part of their January showcase covering over a dozen local artists works, running January 8- 31, 2010.

Art ranges from limited edition and open edition prints, hand-crafted jewelry, hand-carved wooden sculptures to original paintings and photography, mixed-medium sculptures, and ceramics.

The Opening Reception is Sunday, January 17th, 2010 from 6pm-8pm. During the reception I, along with other artists, will be available to discuss and answer questions about the inspiration, meaning and motivation behind the work exhibited.

The gallery is located at 5702 Baltimore Avenue in Hyattsville, Maryland. Gallery hours are as follows:

New York Doll Collecting Examiner Interviews Moi!

Happy New Year everyone! One of the major surprises of the new year is the posting of my two part interview with none other than Elizabeth de Almeida, the New York Doll Collecting Examiner in a three part series entitled "The Soul of Creativity In Doll Making". Her first article of the same title introduces the reader into the art and soul of doll making. Her second article One of a kind art soul dolls – interview with doll artist, Sherry Ways-Part 1 discusses my emergence as a doll artist and inspirations. The third article Sherry Ways and spirtual challenges as a doll artist- interview part 2 delves a little more about my personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences being a doll artist.

My New Year's Affirmation

TIP OF THE DAY: it occurs to me, on this eve of the new year, that every year of my life has been better than the previous year. Sure there were tough times but those times made me stronger, both emotionally and spiritually. I would not trade 2009 for anything and I can't wait to see what adventures await in 2010! ...

Kwanzaa Dolls!

Hoping everyone is having a happy holiday. I just remembered that I posted these dolls on my FaceBook fan page and did not share them with my bloggers. Well here they are Sam and Samantha! These are the largest dolls I have ever made. They are 40 inches each! These were for a commission I did earlier in the month. MICHELLE LISENBEE is a mixed media collage artist who creates highly textured colorful collages grounded in American heritage and memorabilia. Her artworks make lovely framed wall displays that will embellish any space.

Highlights of Sankofa's Open Studio, November 22nd!

Sankofa Studio held our first Open Studio at Passageways Artist Studios on Sunday, November 22nd in Riverdale Park, Maryland. It was a wonderful occasion to show off our latest dolls and meet collectors in person. We even had a surprise visit from one of my favorite doll artists, Gwendolyn Aqui and her husband.

As a new member of Passagways Studios I was surprised at the number of collectors who came through. Some of which never looked at the art of dolls from the same perspective as 2 D art forms.

We served refreshments as people marveled at the lovely pins, dolls and wall hangings that were displayed in the studio. Also, we got several sales to boot.

I wish to thank everyone who attended who made the event special!

Joy Diet Update: Non Connection With an Old Friend

Chapter 9 Connection was an interesting chapter in the Joy Diet because it hit so close to a recent situation with a friend that I had known from my previous career who is working through some personal concerns.

I had dinner with her the other week and she met me at my studio. Upon seeing her she looked not as put together as I had always known her. Her hair was out of place and she seemed not particularly at ease.

We talked about her current job situation which is very negative, the issues surrounding her mother's death, extremely hurtful, and a recent breakup with a boyfriend which provided the icing on the cake.

Throughout our talk it seemed as if she felt that I was not sympathizing with her on what was going on in her life. She seemed quite bitter and I could not CONNECT with her.

She appeared restless, a little annoyed at some questions that I asked her and even snapped at me a couple of times about little things. Then she preached about something she thought I should do.

At the end of the evening I began to meditate on the questions from this chapter:

1) I learned to reach a place of peace while I was with her. As she was in her miserable mood, I learned to stay at peace through out the dinner. Stay in my own skin.

2) Learn to tell yourself the truth while interacting with someone else.

What am I feeling about this person? Very negative, taking my energy down.
Is there anything about this relationship that hurts? Yes, everything right now.
What about the story? She is missing her mother, depressed, angry, not connected to anyone outside her space including me.
Is the story true? Yes.
Is the story working for me? Yes, I realize what it is and where it is coming from and it makes me feel saner as a result.
Can I think of another story that might work better? Yes, I think the next story will be to send her a card or something to demonstrate that I understand and provide her space for a while.

3) Identify what you want in the relationship. I identified that I think she and I definitely need space and that her current situation is not healthy for me to be around. I would like the relationship to grow and become closer, but she is not healthy enough for this right now.

4) Risk Openness. I intend to let her know how I feel. I have not decided in what way yet.

Joy Diet Update: Play and Laughter!

Again things have been quite busy for me and I apologize that I have not posted in a while. Trying to prepare for holiday shows and my design clients really keep me hopping with things to do. As a matter of fact, it seems I was too busy for one of my "followers" of this blog who decided to unfollow me within the last 48 hours. But to my faithful followers I am BACK and I here is my report on the Joy Diet from the past two weeks!

Joy Diet: Play

The author asks in this chapter- what did you you do on the evening of 9/11? 9/11 was one of the United States' severe crises, which divides our lives between the before and after.

I had to think about this one a bit. I remember working my good government job being told to leave immediately, jumping on one of the first metro trains out of Washington, DC heading home and sitting by the television all day and all night. I tried desparately to call members of my family to see if they were alright.

Was this a defining moment? No not really. 911 was indeed one of the most scariest times I have experienced. But did it define what I should be doing? I don't know except worrying and fretting over the lives of my family members.

Fast forward to the summer of 2005. The defining moment for me to change careers and focus on something else came when one of my colleagues, a young newly married, healthy looking, 27 year old, training program professional on a detail assignment from Georgia, on my good government job, suddenly dropped dead while talking to her supervisor in the office directly across mine.

Wow! It hit me like a ton of bricks! At that moment the role and the act I was playing in my career: working hard, playing the right game, speaking the right way, dressing the right way, joining the right professional development groups, be seen at the right places, make sure I was working on projects that "matter to the office", climbing that so called ladder of success, making that job more important than anything on the planet, kissing #$%, traveling all over, making others look good, taking insults, being disrespected, questioned, spied on, did not matter anymore....

Within two years I went on to a new career and started the art of doll making and mixed media shortly thereafter.

Fast forward 2009- not just 2009 but November 2009. Well this was an interesting chapter to read. Why you ask? Because it just fell into some reflection I was having in particular about my doll making career. It appears I have had to "play" alot of "games" lately. Mostly the game of playing a "victim" to gallery owners who make decisions without my knowledge or simply disrespect my doll work. This game has been quite interesting because of their sweet and in some cases sour role they play to make me feel one way or the other about my doll art or simply withholding information that eventually becomes public knowledge.

Without going into detail about these "incidences" I have had to make a tough decision about whether or not to continue to move forward with doll making. I began to doubt myself and my abilities. I reasoned that these incidences have not made me what do you say? Feel good. Is this the game I signed up for and want to continue to play as a creative entrepreneur?

But what about the overall direction of the doll making career? How do I strategize to determine if there is improvement needed, a new set of gallery partners? Do I work with galleries at all or simply begin the online selling world of Etsy or reconfigure my website to be more of a shopping cart? I DO know that the same team I have had in the past year is now no more. Also, I am doing a lot of reflection on the role I have played in this art career, how cut throat it is and whether or not the art itself continues to bring me joy.

I look at myself as an OOKA doll artist. Nothing else. I do not do rag dolls, I do not do children's dolls. I take my art seriously and only wanted presented in respectable places as well as honored for what it is. Yes, some don't get it; don't think it meets some "standard" of ethnic doll making. Some think it is "voodoo" or whatever. But guess what? I woke up this morning and determined that I don't care. I am going to continue to blossom shine, and make dolls that collectors will appreciate.

I am reminded of a recent tweet by Iyanla Vanzant which goes like this:
"As you run your race in life,don't worry about the other runners. Stay focused and you'll pass them. Competition isn't the way to victory."

Laughter

Okay this chapter is right up my alley. Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE to LAUGH! I think because I was raised by a father who is so funny. Laughter always permeated our household growing up. My sister and I love to laugh about silly things, also things that are not apparent to everyone else. I guess it is this "twin" thing we have.

To be honest laughter is something I can find everyday. My business partner, my fellow artists at Passageways, my husband, my cat, my brother, father, sister, brother, television- there is a lot in life that people experience or I watch that makes me laugh.

The hardest thing that I find trouble with laughing at is myself. As many of my close friends and family know, I take myself way too seriously! This is where the Joy Diet got me. How do I find humor in myself? If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. This is something I intend on meditating on.

Joy Dieting While Treating Myself to Ace of Cake!

Ok my biggest Treat of the week was to meet Duff Goldman of Ace of Cakes and get him to sign his book, Ace of Cakes: Inside the World of Charm City Cakes. I was so thrilled that this made number 1 on my list of spontaneous smile sparkers. I actually treated myself to purchasing his book and on the same day found myself at the head of the line waiting for good ole' Duff to come forward and sign the book after being featured as a noon day speaker at a conference I attended.

Here are some of my other spontaneous smile sparkers this week:

1) Meeting Duff Goldman of Ace of Cakes
2) Drinking my favorite starbucks drink.
3) Completing an art doll.
4) Listening to a song by The Beatles!
5) Receiving a compliment for my work
6) Getting a nationally known doll collector to purchase my work.
7) Hearing my husband say "I love you"
8) Watching my cat "Paka" try to "talk" to me
9) Spending time in the art studio and working on my new projects.
10) Watching the Yankees and Phillies move to the World Series.

I treat myself every day to a Starbucks coffee usually a chai or mocha. It is a little thing but it means a lot to me. Also, if I see a book, a CD or something I want to have I will try to purchase it.

I don't require much for treating. Even a hug a day will do as a treat for me.

Risk with Rewards, A Lesson from Duff!

Hello All. I apologize that I was so busy last week, I did not have a chance to write about risk. So here I am.

I guess as fate puts it, risk has been associated with me all of my life. I have always taken well, uh calculated risks.

Risk is a major word in my vocabulary and I do pretty good at orchestrating it. I am a BIG Food Network fan and anyone who watches knows about Duff Goldman, Ace of Cakes, CEO of Charm City Cakes in Baltimore, MD. I was just reading a book by Food Network's Ace of Cakes star Duff Goldman, called "Ace of Cakes: Inside the World of Charm City Cakes."

One chapter or page in particular struck me when Duff describes leaving his job and starting his business Charm City Cakes for the first time,

"On March 3, 2002, I left my job and started decorating cakes full-time. In my apartment in downtown Baltimore. Health Department? Permit? Tax ID? Nope. If figured I would cross those bridges when I came to them (or, more appropriately, they came to me). There is nothing, I repeat, nothing that can yet you motivated to run a business like when I woke up on March 4 and realized I didn't have a paycheck anymore. Want to learn how to jump? Paint yourself into a corner. I won't say roll the dice, because I knew I had no choice but to succeed. Well, so far trusting my instincts had never felt so good."

I resonated so much with what Duff described because on September 1, 2006, I did the same thing. I quit a very secure, yet frustrating federal job/career to focus on my first art business full time, my interior design business, Design Scheme Interiors, LLC. I knew on September 2nd that I best get my butt moving and create demand for my business. And guess what? The reason why I could not write last week was because I had to prepare and give a big design presentation for one of four clients that I currently work with!

It gets to a point where failure is no option and you HAVE to make things work or you are just well... screwed.

Then in 2008, I went back to my love of art. I took some classes a while ago with a noted doll artist in the DC area. I loved it. However, growing Design Scheme Interiors got in the way and never went back to it. So my sister Sharon kept telling me to go back and start making dolls again. I was shy about it and did not think I had artistic skills. Finally, in late 2007, I began making a couple of dolls and showed them very reluctantly at a neighbor's holiday soiree. Man I was amazed, every last doll was snatched and sold!

I said ok. Maybe there is future in this, by the end of 2008, I had participated in one art exhibition at a gallery, wrote one article for Soft Dolls and Animals Magazine, sold several dolls at a local doll boutique and was featured in a Doll Collector's book. How is that for trusting your instincts.

Again, I had no idea. Risk is second nature for me and when I look back at my life, I noticed that I have always risked things. I made some stupid moves and some smart ones. But at the end, I always as Duff puts it- trust my instincts. I pray a lot, cry a lot but when times get tough, I always say keep moving.

I take risks everyday. Small goals. Like going to a place I never been before, talking to someone I normally do not talk to or this is the BIG one, attending an event by myself. So this chapter was easy for me.

Creativity!

Wow Martha Beck got me on this one. As one of the other blogger's mentioned, I thought this chapter would be one that helps us explore our creativity. Quite the opposite. She wants us to explore our enemies, our failures, look at doing something completely different when we are approaching creativity.

Failure as creativity?? Wow that made me sit down! I have had my share of those and yes they were true learning experiences! The other suggestion examines your enemies (or the street term "haters"), list their traits and consider whether their traits are some I should take on? Heavy dose of medicine on that one. Somehow I do not feel comfortable lamenting on their negative energy.

So this is what I decided to do on this one. I decided that I would be creative in exploring new activities such as snow boarding for example. I decided to try something completely new and completely outside my element. Do something different each month-(I am not going to say each week) and use that as a creativity exercise to think differently about my desires and goals. Not sure what those activities will be but I am certain I will find plenty of new experiences.

Our fearless leader and instructor, Camilla La Mer demonstrates the art of Soul Dolls!

Well what can I say, my Art Soul Doll class at the Tactile Textile Arts Center, a premier art center and gallery in the textile arts in Denver, Colorado was AWESOME. Six of us came together with one soul, one purpose to learn and be inspired by none other than doll artist, Camilla La Mer. Instantly when I arrived I first met Chris who was a wonderful lady who volunteers at the art center. Then I met Camilla- so warm, thoughtful, spiritual and lovable! We hugged when we met like kindred souls.

During the class I experienced the exhilaration of spontaneous expression! Everyone who participated left their inner critics at the door as we entered a safe, non-judgmental environment where exploration was encouraged. Soul Doll Artist Camilla La Mer made the class fun and inspirational in the art of doll making. Through this experience, I embraced the opportunity to allow my creativity to reveal itself to me. Art Soul Dolls are dolls of healing and symbolism. These are the kind of dolls that I most drawn to and plan on starting a series soon highlighting them.

Camilla began the class with a poem to contemplate on called "The Journey." She also shared her own personal experiences as well as introduced us to her own beautiful Art Soul Dolls being displayed in the Tactile Textile Arts Center.

The other students: Carolyn, highly creative and inspirational, Joyce, truly an artistic gem, Jessica, a woman budding with a future in the arts, were the warmest women I ever met with a passion for all things spiritual and creativity. We all spent Sunday afternoon learning from each other, sharing stories, creating our Art Soul Dolls under the careful instruction of Camilla.

We shared a lovely lunch together and afterward completed our work and proudly displayed our wonderful creations for the day! I was so happy and inspired with all the work. I was also pleased with my own mermaid creation which I made based on a recent personal experience. She (the mermaid) will continue to give me comfort during various trials in my life.

I truly enjoyed the class and my experience. I look forward to heading back to Denver and meeting with these women again soon!

Denver Miniatures, Dolls and Toys Museum

This past Saturday, I visited the Denver Museum of Minatures, Dolls and Toys. The mission of the Museum is to provide educational and cultural services to the greater Rocky Mountain region through the preservation, exhibition, collection and interpretation of the visual arts using miniatures, dolls and toys.

I spent a few hours touring the miniature doll houses, the doll collections including antique Japanese dolls acquired through the 1927 Friendship Doll exchange between Japan and the United States, Native American dolls, and an impressive Barbie Doll collection.

In addition, the miniature doll houses made by different artists and enthusiasts were a wonder to see! There is so much to see there and the museum offers workshops for children and educates those who visit the importance and sacredness of doll collecting.

Joy Diet: Thoughts on Desire

I am writing from Denver, Colorado this morning. Of course I am up way early because it is east coast time. I am writing to share with you the chapter of the week on Desire from our journey through the Joy Diet.

On my way out to Denver on the plane- I read The Rolling Stones Magazine's Tribute to Michael Jackson. I was surprised to learn that after Jacko's Off the Wall LP, Michael had a strong desire to get a Grammy award because he felt that the work on the album was superb. He did not get but one Grammy and he was extremely disappointed. So he set out to do an album of all albums. The next album he thought will win everything and be the best album of all time. Well it turns out Thriller did just that. But what was next? Did he ever get to the now what?

After reading this chapter, I began to think about my life and my true desires. I found that I have already in some cases found my true desires. I am now working part time as a doll and mixed media artist and full time as an interior decorator. So obviously I am in two creative fields. This came about through acting upon my strong desires about 6 years ago and developing a plan of action to get there.

So after thinking about that, I paused again and started thinking- "now that I have accomplished what I want to do, what is my desire NOW?" So after some meditation I began to think about what is coming up as my strongest desire.

Here it is: one of the things as a doll artist I encounter most often is the feeling that dolls are somehow considered voodoo. People in particular look at my art dolls, the ones with the wild hair that in my opinion really speak to an artistic statement, and say "are your dolls voodoo dolls?" Then I want to shake them and give them a history of what art dolls are and what they are all about.

This led me to think about putting together some sort of education program in my community. I am considering a video, forum, book or some other venue to educate the public about what art dolls are and what they are not. This desire keeps coming up in me and I feel like I have to in some way act on it.

This may seem trite and maybe not too deep for some folks, but the desire to act and to educate the public about the importance of art dolls as a true art form is very important to me.

I am writing notes and getting inspiration from various sources on this subject. I am also looking for any thoughts my blogg readers may have in getting this information.

As I read through the chapter I have decided to put together an outline or plan of action based on the recommendations. I am hoping to see some results shortly.

Creating A Dream Box!

My sister Sharon suggested that I take Jennifer Lee's Dream Box workshop that took place at Kim Wilson of Tranquil Space's home this past friday evening. I truly enjoyed myself.

The purpose was to create a box collage of your dreams. Words and encouraging messages to help you pursue your future goals. Kim Wilson was a wonderful host offering some of the best apple cider that I ever tasted!

Jennifer, a creative coach, came in from California and was in town for a Creative Entrepreneur conference. She was lovely.

We all sat on the floor of Kim's condo in Dupont Circle with lots of magazines, modge podge glue, our boxes and great conversation!

However, the big hit was Kim's cat (see pics)- he was all over the place and dared anyone to try to pet him LOL!

I created my dream box to focus on improving who I am mentally, spiritually and physically. See my box above.

The other creative people there were fabulous and it was a true growth experience for me.

Thank you Jennifer, Sharon, Kim and all the others for a creatively good time!

The Truth: The Supremes, The Beatles, and Other Self Revelations!

Okay, I read the Truth chapter of the Joy Diet. Boy this was very complex for me.

I love celebrities, in particular, musicians and music groups. Many years ago, I read a book by Mary Wilson one of the famous Supremes of Motown called "Where Did Our Love Go?". The book chronicles the life of being one of the Supremes during the 60's and the truth of the behind the scenes frolicking of Diana Ross and their mentor, producer, director, and Founder of Motown Mr. Berry Gordy. This book was written right after the famous Motown 25 show in the early 80's where the late Michael Jackson fascinated us with his gliding moonwalk across the floor.

Mary recounts in her book that Diana Ross played ugly during rehearsals for their number and acted like a complete you know what towards her and Florence Ballard between takes of the show. It appears that Mary finally faced her music and was fed up with the whole scene and previous scenes played out in her life with Diana and the Supremes and finally opened up to write an account, her truth, which set her free in this very revealing book.

A few months ago, I put together a collage that chronicled this- called Truth. My older blogger followers recognize this piece but I wanted to share this with my newer readers because of the name and how it describes the freedom Mary must have felt when she was finally able to reveal her true feelings about her experience. She was no longer in her mind protecting herself or Diana Ross. Mary took the criticisms and the consequences that went along with that.

Also, I was reminded again of who else? The Beatles... John Lennon in 1968 upon the Beatles return from the pilgrimage to India to see the Maharishi wrote a song called "Sexy Sadie" which appeared on their White Album. I was very intrigued by this song so I did some research. Turns out it was really a song about the John Lennon's truth about the Maharishi. How while they were in India things went a different direction and there was talk that the Maharishi may have tried to make sexual advances towards one of the participants. Instead of calling the song Sexy Marharishi the lyrics were changed so to protect the "innocent".

Why do I bring this up? I think the chapter on truth was one of major revelation. I think at times we know the truth about ourselves yet, we change the words of the songs of our own lives to protect ourselves- the innocent. I have found this to be true for myself and others I know. We can keep ignoring things and lie to ourselves.

For me the truth is that my body is talking to me constantly, trying to show me the evidence of my life practices.

Pain talks to us about how we treat and have treated our bodies. Our faces and hands evidence our life successes and challenges. Our hearts open or close based on how we treat ourselves and others. Do I listen? Do I know how to listen?

It's time we all became more conversant with our bodies and souls. They draw our attention to the hopes and dreams that we had forgotten. They help us create new dreams for our future! This is my truth.

Who will listen to the truth if I don't?

Elizabeth de Almeida is the Art Doll Collecting writer for the New York Examiner. I really love her tweets and her writings on doll collecting. I thought her latest entry dated September 28th was quite educational and informative. Quoting directly from her post:

WOW! I love how she puts everything in such a way that to me explains what doll artistry truly is. Particularly I am intrigued with her various "Schools". I cannot wait for her next article on primitive dolls.

The Joy Diet: Art of Nothing

This is a doll I made this week. She is happy doing nothing.

Okay folks, the nothing that I did this week:

1) I took a couple of walks
2) Sat in my chair for 15 minutes doing nothing with my eyes closed.

Very hard folks! But this exercise taught me to be still and know. I thought about this as I heard an old Beatles tune "Let It Be" ..... There will be an answer... Let it Be." So that was what I did this week. Things that I normally worry about, I just let it be and said what will get done will get done. Not to fret.

So with that attitude I begin the next week and the day looking forward to reading the next chapter and practicing in my own humble way what it means.

The Joy Diet: A Journey To My Happy & Creative Self

As usual my twin sister Sharon of Gemini Visions is always on the cutting edge of the blogging, twittering and facebook world. She mentioned to me about a blogger book club that is going to reading The Joy Diet by Martha Beck. At first, I said to myself, "you know I do not have the time to read something like this and keep up with the postings." Then I simply went to the The Next Chapter The Joy Diet Book Club blogger website by Jamie Ridler, a certified professional co-active coach and was totally hooked in.

You see the actual begin date was this past Friday. However, in my usual late way, I just read about it in detail today and thus am starting today. I did not have the book so just clicked on my trusty Amazon link and ordered it. I will be getting it by Tuesday so I can too join in on the fun and learning.

The first chapter in the book is called Nothing. So which will be a REAL challenge for me, I will dedicate myself for this first week to occupying time doing NOTHING. What will that be? I will post this experience on Friday.

Reach for College! is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting equity by increasing and supporting the number of traditionally disadvantaged students who pursue and complete post-secondary education.

On Saturday, September 19, 2009 Reach for College is holding their Annual Gathering and Arts Fundraiser to Benefit Youth Going to and Succeeding in College in Baltimore, Maryland. However, this is a closed private reception.

The ARCH Development Corporation {or ADC} is a not for profit cultural development organization located in the Historic Sector of Anacostia in Southeast, Washington, DC.

The ADC mission is to aid in 1.) positively & inclusively revitalizing Anacostia, East of the Anacostia River, 2.) helping to create sustainable living neighborhoods within the Historic Sector and 3.) creating a home for the arts and artists, east of the Anacostia River.

Liberated Muse: Celebration of Freedom at the Potter's House

Liberated Muse Productions is at it again with another musical night of performances from DC's best and readings from the new book release Liberated Muse Volume I: How I Freed My Soul which features visual artists and writers from the Liberated Muse network.

Featured performers include songstress Quineice Clarkson, musician Gary Young, diva singer Mahoganee, poetic vocalist Ozara Ode and the spoken word of Margaux Delotte-Bennett and Jade Andwele of the renowned Saartjie ("Sar-Key) Project. Jazzy soul vocalist Colie Williams will open the show with a half-hour set with members from her band.

The evening will be hosted by Moon of Liberated Muse and feature live art by visual artist extraordinaire Choke, the Liberated Muse member of this month of August.

Libeated Muse member, curator, and my twin sister, Sharon Burton will also curate an exhibit of visual art which will be open for viewing during the show at the Potter's House. The exhibit will feature work from artists featured in the book Liberated Muse Volume I: How I Freed My Soul and others. I will have two small mixed media pieces as part of this show.

Donations from the event will fund youth programming facilitated by the Saartjie Project. A $7 donation is requested, but all are welcome to pay as they can.

Sankofa Studios Has Been Accepted Into Passageways Studios in Riverdale, Maryland!

I just wanted to let you know that I have just been juried into the Passageways Artist Studio in Riverdale, Maryland! Therefore, Sankofa Studio will have an established studio from which we will be working. I am so excited and in the process of moving now!

A little about Passageways:

Passageways came together in 1991 when a group of local artists found a large open space for rent in conveniently located Riverdale, Maryland. The artists rolled up their collective sleeves and constructed ten airy studios - learning to make drywall partitions, and other construction tasks. Five of the early members are still active in Passageways.

Passageways functions as a cooperative, providing: a congenial working environment for creative artists; an opportunity to interact, collaborate, and learn from colleagues; and an opportunity to show work with other members of the group. The various members work in painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, photography, stained-glass, sculpture, tapestry, quilting and fiber arts - wherever the muse directs.

They host an open-studio event twice a year - in the spring and in the fall. The dates are posted on this website, along with directions. They heartily invite you to come to the open-studio to see the latest work of our artists, and chat with them about art, while enjoying light refreshments.

The ARTISTS section of this website contains representative samples of our work along with contact information. You are invited to call to arrange an appointment to view and discuss the work of a favorite artist in greater depth.

Studio vacancies occur from time-to-time. If you are a working artist and wish to be placed on a waiting list for studio space, call them at 301 459-8038, and learn more about the jurying process.

Redefined Cultural Creativity presented by Vivant Art Collection: an exhibit featuring artists, Cheryl Durgans, Donna YaYa by Lino, Nataki McNeal Bhatti, Sharon Burton and Sherry B. Ways. Experience their personal explorations, respectively of social justice, cultural vibrancy, afro pop, historical freedom and contemporary Black dolls.

Cheryl Durgans is a writer, visual artist and cultural activist, who speaks to the social realities of ethnicity and womanhood in modern politics. Within her paintings her techinique of layering and re-using various images allows her to create abstraction, however social and political tones are evident.

Donna Yaya by Lino in her paintings embraces Brazilian culture and her feminine spiritual side while a product of her father reflects her masculinity and strength. She utilizes birght colors and bold compositions to illuminates her past memories and within the same stroke she paintings abstract suggestion what the future may hold!

Nataki McNeal Bhatti is an African aesthetic and revolutionary artist, who has created her own interpretative language, style and techinique. She is in an exploratory stage in which each work comes from different tangent degrees separate from the others. The one common thread in her paintings is the use of chroma and natural inclinations which authenticates her Accapella voice.

Sharon Burton is a mixed media artist (digital photography, oil pastel, collage, assemblage, water color and mixed media on paper, board & canvas), in which she not only explores but express the freedom of spirituality, gender issues and African American history and culture.

Sherry B. Ways personal journey as African American artist includes observation, exploration and daily reflection in which she studies and paints metaphysics, spirituality, race relations, gender, and African American folk traditions and how these factors influence the views of society.

Vivant Art Collection is located on Gallery Row in the heart of Old City, Philadelphia. Sights and Sounds of the Vivant Collection Reception of the National Black Women's Art Festival, Philadelphia, PA, Friday, July 31, 2009

At first there was a huge storm that dowsed the City of Brotherly Love late Friday afternoon and as I looked out my hotel window, I pondered as to how I was going to get to Vivant Collection to attend the reception. Then like magic the rain subsided and sunshine crepted through the clouds.

I truly enjoyed the reception with fantastic poetry by Nina 'Lyrispect' Ball and Nikki Powerhouse and the fantastic world music of Cocosol. I also gave a small artist talk about my artwork as well as my sister's Sharon J. Burton .

I met some wonderful artists there in the Philadelphia area including one of the artist's in the show Cheryl Durgans.

There was a lot of excitement in the air and the work showed very well. Thanks to Florcy for making the reception a success!

Nikki Powerhouse
Nikki Powerhouse is a native of Philadelphia, PA soil. An actor, playwright, poet, nude figure model and freedom dancer who uses her many artistic expressions to promote healing. She began her extensive theater training at the Philadelphia Creative Performing Arts High School, and continued honing her passion at Black Nexxus, and Theatre for New Generation. Her New York City stage credits include: 'Notice Me', presented in NYC Fringe Festival, 'Sex, God, and Heels', 'Queen Mary of Scotland' and 'Khepera'. In Philadelphia she has trained with The New Freedom Theater, she recently finish her BFA at Temple University School of Theater Communications. Philadelphia stage credits includes: her one-woman show 'Fantasy Is An Addiction' (2005 Philly Fringe Festival), lead role in 'Antigone', 'Seven Guitars', 'Fences', and 'Merry Wives of Windsor'. Cocosol
Burning with a distinct & intoxicating life force, CocoSol is an International Songstress & multi-instrumentalist. Her music is a wonderful world funk symphony woven with catchy guitar licks, sultry voice, fiery rhythms and longing melodies. In Montreal, CocoSol grew up in a large family of nine, Brady Bunch style. While a teenager, she took the stage as a root dancer and singer percussionist with Ayana & Batanes; two Malian/Cuban premier ensembles and appeared as a recording artist on their release, Batanes. Sherry Burton Ways
Sherry Burton Ways is a self-taught mixed media and art doll artist. In late 2007, Sherry was challenged by my twin sister and artist, Sharon J. Burton, to create dolls and art again. In December 2007, she created Sankofa Doll Artistry, which provided her an opportunity to begin creating mixed media art and art dolls reflective of women of the African Diaspora. Her doll art has been recently published in the book, “Black Dolls: A Comprehensive Guide to Celebrating, Collecting and Experiencing the Passion” by Debbie Behan Garrett, Soft Dolls & Animals Magazine and Doll Castle News Magazine. Cheryl Durgans
I am inspired by the writings of Octavia Butler and James Baldwin, the collage/assemblage art of Romare Bearden, the investigative prowess of investigative reporter Seymour Hersh, and my late father’s brilliant ability to solve complex problems as an engineer. I am intrigued by non-linear composition, layering conceptual elements on top of one another to tell a cohesive story. I grew up straddling the world of my working class relatives’ fun, cool, jazzy, but kitschy vibe with my college educated parents more pragmatic approach to living a structured, emerging African American middle class existence. Because of my background, I like to play with identity politics. Printmaking, painting and writing are important aspects of my art making process. I am particularly intrigued by the overall look achieved by using printmaking techniques.

Nataki Bhatti
A love and understanding of art was both nurtured and natured in Nataki McNeal Bhatti. She comes from a family of artists, Nataki’s mother, F. Diane McNeal was a textile & fiber artist, master papermaker and visual artist; her grandfather, F. D. McNeal, was a folk artist and her father is a painter and classical musician. One thing is certain. Nataki was raised to be an artist. She states, “I did not choose art, it choose me.” Despite challenge, she is obedient to her calling. Nataki received a dual degree in Art and African American Studies from Penn State University where she focused on African aesthetic and revolutionary art, which is the philosophical basis of all of her work. Nataki is presently working on a series of paintings that explore the black icon and harmonize conflict and movement within color. She continues to teach locally, give private lessons and facilitates various workshops. Nataki continues communicating spirit with a performance conversation about the dichotomies of being a black-woman-mother-artist-wife.

Sharon Burton
As a self-taught artist, I am influenced by the spiritual world, especially representations of beliefs and customs in a variety of cultures. I also use art to respond to social issues that affect those most vulnerable individuals in our society. I choose the appropriate medium, whether painting, mixed media, collage, or photography from the “visions” which guide me in during the creative process. I am influenced by African American culture and history, especially now that our country has elected the first African American President.

Simone Lino aka Donna Yaya by Lino
August 10th, 1978, on a sunny afternoon in Minas Gerais, a Brazilian artist was born. Simone’s (aka Donna Yaya by Lino) parents engrossed their daughter into several artistic activities. From the age of nine, she took art classes three times a week which blossomed into her passion. She also took dance classes and learned to samba dance like a true Brazilian native. Simone is also a performing vocal artist and use to sing in the choir of Parana University of Arts (2001-2003). Since moving from Rio de Janeiro to Philadelphia in 2005, she reconnected with her art to fill in the absence of her parents and family. Simone also known as “Donna Yayá by Lino” in her paintings, she embraces her feminine spiritual side while a product of her father reflects her masculinity and strength. Oil is her preferred medium of choice because of the complexity in the texture and movement. Donna Yaya by Lino expresses herself through freedom of colors, leaving ample room for the viewers’ imagination. Simone Lino’s personality is bright and energetic, which spills onto the canvas like a kaleidoscope!

Hello all! We had such a great time at the Capital Hip Hop Soul Festival in Northeast Washington, DC. We had great sales from some of our Facebook fans including the Honorable Councilperson for Ward 7 in Washington, DC, Yvette Alexander!

The food, music and artwork were great. I experienced a little dehydration due to the HOT weather- but all the same it was fun. Many thanks to Liberated Muse Productions and my sis Sharon J. Burton of Gemini Visions for the opportunity.

My Artist's Date in Solomons, Maryland: Art & Nature!

Folks, there comes a time where you have to take yourself on an artist's date. Not just any artist's date but one where you truly immerse yourself in a totally different environment than you normally do. For those of you who don't know an artist's date is one that was popularized by the book entitled, "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron. See the May posts for more information about her and my experience with her workshop.

Last week I went to Solomon's Island, Maryland which is about an hour away from where I live in Washington, DC. I stayed at the Solomon's Victorian Inn a lovely place where I found the inn keepers, Helen and Richard a true joy to stay with. The place was so nicely landscaped and serene. I felt I wanted to stay there forever. It was truly about art and nature and my being.

First, because of my feng shui studies I am considered a weak water element. Which means that water and surrounding myself with it nourishes and replenishes all that I am. Therefore I needed to be near water which Solomons has a lot of.

Second, I wanted to be inspired by nature, water and art and to my surprise I successfully had acquired all three!

My room had a lovely view of the boat docks and was very comfortable.

I traveled around the island visiting various places, particularly the eateries such as the CD Cafe and the Four Winds Cafe taking in all the good seafood I can possibly stomach.

The highlight however, was visiting Anne Marie Garden Sculpture Park and Arts Center .

This artful delight provided me a sense of true artistic delight as I roamed the outdoor sculpture park filled with various sculptures borrowed from the Smithsonian Institution. The highlight was the "Woman's Walk" which featured various sculptures of women in various forms. This was truly a spiritual experience.

The sculptures that I experienced really set the mood and provided me inspiration for the doll work and mixed media work I do.

As I walked the grounds of the park I felt very meditative. I took as many photos as I could to provide me memories of this glorious experience with you.

If you are an artist or even if you are not, consider taking yourself on an artist date. It is one of the best mental health experiences you can give yourself.

A Tribute To A True Artist- Michael Jackson- May He Rest In Peace

I grew up watching Mr. Jackson and I am saddened as everyone is by his early departure from this earth on last Thursday. No matter what his personal life entails, he opened the door for many in the entertainment business, knocked down racial barriers for ALL artists and for that I am grateful. I choose to celebrate his life and accomplishments, knowing he is always there! Peace!

LIBERATED MUSE VOL.1: How I Freed My Soul!

I want yall to know that my beloved twin sister, Sharon J. Burton's artwork is on the cover of Liberated Muse Productions first art inspired book entitled Liberated Muse Vol 1: How I Freed My Soul. I just purchased the book from Amazon and cannot wait for it to come in so I can get signatures from the artists as well as the editor and founding CEO of Liberated Muse, Khadijah "Moon" Ali-Coleman.

Liberated Muse Productions (LMP) is an arts-based events planning group based in the Washington DC metropolitan area. LMP was created in 2007 by writers and community activists Maceo Thomas and Khadijah "Moon" Ali-Coleman. The intent was to create events promoting artistry and awareness of issues pivotal to urban communities. LMP has become a network of dedicated artists and patrons of the arts. The Capital Hip Hop Soul Fest is an LMP landmark event.

In addition, LMP promotes artistry and has taken the lead as being the Nation's Capital's leader in supporting social causes that focus on introducing urban audiences to diverse and uplifting programming. Liberated Muse Productions have sponsored cultural events held by leading groups such as: DC for Obama, Young & Powerful for Obama, ACLU, Mentoring Today, Humanities Council of DC.

This new anthology focuses on the subject of "artistic freedom". The anthology actually focuses on the concept of freedom and freeing one's soul. The writings and visual art express that concept in various ways. Some of the writers discuss the act of freeing oneself from everything from a hopeless love affair to a pre-occupation with what other people think. Some of the writers even address the concept of spiritual freedom and forgiveness. I chose the topic because of my own struggle with freeing my artistic voice while finding a fulfilling balance between my art and my responsibilities. My own exploration of this led to me wanting to read what other people's ideas on the subject were.

Readers should expect to read personal sharings and fiction in the form of visual art, poetry, essay, and short story. The writings will make an impression that will stay with the reader for a long while after reading. Whether the reader wants to laugh, cry, be dazzled or just validated, they will connect with this anthology. The biggest thing the reader can expect is to be engaged.

The book will be the featured book on July 25 at the Capital Hip Hop Soul Fest which is an annual event held in Washington DC and coordinated by Liberated Muse Productions. (I will be attending the event and will have for sale a few mixed media art pieces and art dolls!)

The book promotion was launched this past Friday, June 19th with readings from the book at the Potter's House in Adams Morgan in DC. Proceeds from the event funded a book & housing deposit fund for students from east of the river in Washington, DC who are attending college in the Fall.

Yesterday evening Saturday, June 20th I attended a show sponsored by Liberated Muse at the annual Artomatic Exhibition in Washington, DC which is a month-long art festival that takes place in DC as well. The Liberated Muse Artomatic shows are June 20 and July 3 on the Artomatic Solo Stage (see announcement above). The production features readings from the book with music performances from prominent DC-based singers and musicians.

The most exciting thing is that I am a member of Liberated Muse Family and have found the organization, top notch, professional and a clear advocate for artists!

A Weekend With The Queen: elinor peace bailey

It was a beautiful Sunday in one of the most quaint main line towns outside of Wayne, Pennsylvania. Wayne is one of those places where you come to and want to stay forever!

I was one of six lucky doll makers to participate in an exciting workshop led by none other than the queen as I call her elinor peace bailey! The Wayne Art Center in Wayne, PA hosted Ms. peace bailey for a workshop in conjunction with their exhibit "Art Dolls: The Diversity of Figure & Form" .

I was truly amazed at elinor's wit as well as her knowledge of all diverse art doll forms including her background in African American folk doll art forms. She started out the workshop with a brief history of the traditional doll making form in the U.S. dating back to the early part of the last century. She spoke of the history of NIADA and other doll groups and movements.

Then we moved into a free flowing art class for those interested in learning more about the structure of a doll and those wishing to learn more about making doll faces (I was in this category). I learned so much about making 3 dimensional faces and drawing, embellishing and painting. It was more than worth the trip.

elinor is truly an amazing gal and I felt honored to be among 6 lucky aspiring and established doll makers to sit at her feet and learn the ways of quality doll making.
