Next Exhibition: City of Fremont California Doll Show

I have been selected to participate in the 2009 Exhibit titled “Olive
Hyde Art Gallery, The Doll Show”. This is a show highlighting local, regional and national artists who hand craft original dolls. Work ranges from the traditional to the contemporary.

This exhibit runs from May 1, 2009 through May 30, 2009. I will feature several past works and new work at the gallery during the show.

The Olive Hyde Gallery is the only public fine arts gallery in the east San Francisco Bay Area between Hayward and San Jose. The gallery is a scenic historical redwood building surrounded by a beautiful garden and art center. The gallery has about 1,000 square feet and 200 running wall feet of exhibit space. There are three gallery rooms and they typically show the work of two or three, within a related theme, at one time. The goal of the gallery is to support and bring the work of local and contemporary Bay Area emerging artists to the Fremont community.

The gallery is located in the Fremont foothills, directly across from the historic Mission San Jose and one block away from the Gary Soren Smith Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Ohlone College.

Maryland Society of Doll Collectors: A Black and White Tea

On a beautiful spring Saturday, I attended the first Maryland Society of Doll Collectors Black and White Tea on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Seven Oaks Community Center in Odenton, Maryland. The Tea featured several doll vendors, a silent auction benefiting the UFDC Foundation, a Doll Forum: The State of the Doll Union and a presentation of Souvenir Dolls.

Welcome remarks were made by Carolyn Ames, the Tea Chairperson followed by an invocation by Jackie Harpp. Greetings were given by Stacia Pate, President of the Maryland Society of Doll Collectors. Doll maker and member Jean Henderson later led a panel discussion of distinctive dolls called the "Doll Forum: The State of the Doll Union" where various members posed as dolls and discussed their appreciation and love for their collectors.

Welcome delights, assorted teas, finger foods and desserts rounded out the affair. The table settings were just wonderful with the finest decorative flair I have ever seen in Black and White. By the way did I say that everyone had to wear black and white?

ABC's Good Morning America Explores Dolls and Race

Now that we have Barack Obama in the White House, questions still remain about race. In the 1940s, the nation was captivated by an electrifying experiment by legendary sociologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark. They asked black children about two dolls, one white and one black. Then all black children interviewed picked the white doll over the black.

Good Morning America just aired an interesting story about the status of African American children and their preference of black or white dolls. Check out the site and video

African American girls, in particular, disturbingly are still feel that white dolls are prettier according to the program. However, African American boys feel that both dolls are pretty. Go figure! We have a lot to do to make African American girls feel good about themselves and beautiful. What can we do???

My Latest Doll Creation: Family Ties!

Here is the latest doll creation that I made called Family Ties. The premise of this doll is the photo of the other dolls that I have previously made on her dress which she is giving thanks to her ancestors and family members who proceeded her. This is a huge doll and is now available. I have submitted it for an art exhibition if it makes it great if not, I will have it available at the Columbia, Maryland Arts Festival.
