This year as part of our 27th Annual Black Doll Exhibit, we are focusing on the "Dolls of Hope", started by Cynthia Davis, professor and program director of Public Health at Charles Drew University. Dolls of Hope are part of Ms. Davis' outreach for HIV/AIDS Awareness and Education.

On February 7th, we will have an event here to commemorate National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. We will hold workshops of the Dolls of Hope, have HIV/AIDS education and we will have mobile HIV testing units outside of our center and music by Brazilian master drummer Carlinhos Pandeiro de Ouro.

February 7th is National Black HIV/AIDS Awarness Day

February 7 is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (http://www.blackaidsday.org/).

A working group of national organizations directs, plans, and organizes National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Make it a goal to do something on this day (and every day) to promote awareness.

Blacks are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. While making up only 13 percent of the U.S. population, they account for more than 49 percent of AIDS cases. AIDS is now the leading cause of death for Black women ages 25 to 34, and the second leading cause of death for Black men ages 35 to 44.

There are many ways you can take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS:

- get tested for HIV
- practice safe methods to prevent HIV
- decide not to engage in high risk behaviors
- talk about HIV prevention with family, friends, and colleagues
- provide support to people living with HIV/AIDS
-get involved with or host an event for National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in your community

Sankofa Doll Artistry and Sherry B. Ways is currently featured in a new artist focused website entitled Mixed Media

As a means to share their vastly different styles, the visual arts collaborative Project Mixed Media was formed by Washington, DC artists Elva R. Lovoz & Prudence Bonds. Here, we'll spotlight fellow artists, offer advice, and share our stories, and share commentary, all to maintain the inextricable ties between the arts and community. Check it out!

New Work

Above are some mixed media art pieces that I have been working on in the past few weeks. These have been recently submitted to a gallery for an opening. More on that later.
